Learn to play roller derby

Want to know what roller derby is about? Want to join? We’re recruiting all the time for skaters, referees, officials and supporters, so come along and see what we do!
The fabulous thing about roller derby is that it’s such an inclusive sport ‐ there is a place for everybody, no matter what your age (as long as you’re over 18), body shape, fitness level, or skating ability is.
No experience necessary and we have spare kit for you to borrow to try roller derby out for yourself. Don’t want to skate? No fear, Non Skating Officials (NSO’s) and Support Crew are a very important part of our team and we’re recruiting!

FAQ
Do I need to be able to skate?
No, we can teach you. The vast majority of roller derby players were taught to skate by their league when they joined, don’t be shy, none of us were born able to skate!
Do I need to have my own kit?
Not at first, we have skates in most sizes and all the protective equipment you’ll need to get you started. You will want to get your own gear before too long, and a mouth guard when you start playing contact – we don’t lend those out!
How much does it cost?
Your first session with us is free.
When you join us as a beginner, sessions are £6 each, pay as you go, for your first month.
Following that, Full Membership to the league is charged at £30 per month.
These costs don’t just cover your time at training – they contribute to the essential costs that keep the league running. Costs to a roller derby league include (but are by no means limited to!…) hall hire, insurance, competition entry fees, purchase of kit for training like cones and bibs, first aid supplies, occasional guest coaches, and hosting games. League coaches are all volunteers.
Will I fall over?
Most likely, even the best skaters fall, especially when they are pushing out of their comfort zone to try something new, that’s why we wear protective equipment (knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet and mouth guard).
Is roller derby an aggressive sport?
Roller Derby is an aggressive sport, but the roller derby community is anything but.
You will find your local league to be friendly, welcoming, and inclusive, and the atmosphere at games to be one of friendly rivalry rather than fierce competition (although that has its place too if you join one of the more ambitious leagues!).
